Party Cookie Recipes - German Spiced Cookies Recipe

Ingredients

  • 3/4 cup/125 g all purpose/plain flour

  • 1 tsp ground cinnamon

  • 1/2 tsp ground cloves

  • 1/2 tsp ground mace

  • 1/8 tsp salt

  • 1/2 tsp grated lemon zest

  • 1/8 tsp ground aniseeds

  • 1/8 tsp ground black pepper

  • 6 tbsp honey

  • 6 tbsp light molasses/treacle

  • 1/4 cup/50 g granulated sugar

  • 2 tbsp butter

  • 1 large egg, lightly beaten


Method:

  1. Preheat the oven to 375°F/190°C/gas 5. Butter two cookie sheets. Sift the flour, cinnamon, cloves, mace, and salt into a large bowl.

  2. Stir in the lemon zest, aniseeds, and black pepper. Mix the honey, molasses, and granulated sugar in a medium saucepan over low heat.

  3. Cook, stirring constantly, until the sugar has dissolved completely.

  4. Add the butter and remove from the heat. Add the egg, beating until just blended.

  5. Mix in the dry ingredients to form a stiff dough. Drop teaspoons of the dough 2 inches (5 cm) apart onto the prepared sheets.

  6. Bake for 12-15 minutes, or until firm and golden brown. Cool on the sheets until the cookies firm slightly. Transfer to racks and let cool completely.
