Swiss Onion Loaf Recipe

 

Ingredients

 

Makes 1 1/2 pound loaf

  • 1/4 cup chopped onion

  • 1 tablespoon butter or margarine

  • 1/2 cup milk

  • 1 cup shredded Swiss cheese (4 ounces)

  • 1/4 cup water

  • 1 egg

  • 2 1/4 cups bread flour

  • 3/4 cup whole wheat flour

  • 3/4 cup caraway seed

  • 1/2 teaspoon salt

  • 1 teaspoon active dry yeast or bread machine yeast


Method:

  1. For this bread, be sure your bread machine pan has a capacity of 10 cups or more.

  2. In a small saucepan cook the onion in hot butter or margarine until tender. Cool slightly.

  3. Add all of the ingredients to the bread machine according to the manufacturer's directions, adding the onion mixture and the cheese with the milk.

  4. Bake using the whole-grain cycle or the basic white bread cycle.
